Last week I attended two unforgettable performances at Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

It was my first time listening live to this acclaimed orchestra and its founder sir John Eliot Gardiner. The program included mainly choral works by Beethoven so the concert also featured Monteverdi Choir(also founded by sir J.E.Gardiner) and soloists.

I am not a huge fan of choral music in general, but the choir and soloists won my heart! Not tremendously large group of singers sounded just magnificently creating unbelievable volume and clarity.

The orchestra played old instruments(mostly made in 19 century) in order to bring authentic sound similar to what Beethoven’s contemporaries might have heard.Strings barely used vibrato, winds had to work harder( due to technical imperfection) etc

It was an interesting experiment, although, I must admit that I probably prefer more contemporary sound except obvious historical interest (it’s like comparing Mercedes made in 1903 to some of the latest models)

But of course their interpretation shaped by great conductor J.E.Gardiner surpassed all other concerns. What a wonderful Thanksgiving gift to OC!
